Acura RDX Review

Truly an explosive entry premium SUV

The RDX, Acura’s entry premium SUV, is a downsized version of the MDX, and comes in two trim levels: Base and Technology. Turbocharged performance, well-crafted exteriors and plush interiors, unveils the RDX as a ready-to-explode sports car. Whether you are heading on or off road, climbing up mountain tracks or parking ramps, the RDX makes a bold statement, promising a heady mix of sporty fun and utility.

The RDX is a compact five-passenger SUV. Some standard features on the Base Package include air bags, stability control, tire-pressure monitoring system, heated outside mirrors and leather heated seats. The Technology Package includes Bluetooth phone connection, navigation system with voice recognition, and real-time traffic info and GPS-linked dual-zone climate control.

Top competitors to the Acura RDX include the BMW X3, the Nissan Murano, the Mazda CX7, and the Mercury Mariner.

The Acura RDX stacks up favorably against the competition in terms of a basic vehicle warranty of 48 months or 50,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of 72 months or 70000 miles.

Engine and Performance

Turbo-touched 4-cylinder

The RDX gains from a 2.3-liter turbocharged DOHC i-VTEC In-line four-cylinder, 16 valve engine that generates 240 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque. A smooth shifting 5-speed automatic transmission with F1-style Sequential SportShift Paddle Shifters and Grade Logic Control is standard.

The on demand all-wheel-drive directs power and traction to the wheels for sure-footed handling under all weather conditions. One touch of its steering wheel and the zippy RDX is ready for action. Fuel economy is at an estimated 19/23 mpg (city/highway).

Walk-around

Beautifully sculpted, youthful, fresh looks

Parked side by side the RDX is the spitting image of big brother Acura MDX with some variations. The design features a slightly shorter wheelbase than the MDX with short overhangs and a slightly arched roofline that highlights the RDXs dynamic character and powerful wheel arches. The striking front-end emphasizes the RDXs youthful character.

The traditional grille along with 18” high performance aluminum alloys tires, halogen fog lamps, rain sensing wind shield wipers, and matching door handles take care of detailing the car’s structure. In the rear, a double exhaust gives it a unique look.

Comfort, Controls and Convenience

Abundant array of features and equipment

For 2007 the interior is classy and plush. Fit and finish are luxurious, there’s plenty of room, and seats are comfortably bolstered and supportive. A telescopic steering wheel, large analog gauges, premium audio and climate control are fit together in a neat, uncluttered way.

The folded rear seat offers good amount stowage in the trunk. A one-piece tailgate allows entry to the fairly roomy cargo area, which can be made larger by flipping forward the rear seatbacks.

Convenience on the RDX includes steering wheel controls, cellular phone capability, 8-way power adjustable front driver’s seat with lumbar support, and a tire pressure monitoring system among many other facilities.

Driving impressions

Outstanding agility

Behind the wheel, the RDX feels more like a sporty sedan than a heavy off-roader. Acura's new on demand all-wheel-drive system regulate power to the wheels when needed. An Independent McPherson strut front suspension and an Independent Multi-link rear suspension add to your control over the vehicle over inconsistent roads.

Precise steering, a tightly controlled suspension, and traction muster up flawless driving dynamics. Handling is helped by an anti-skid/traction control system. Standard anti-lock brakes have sensitivity, making stopping distances short.

If you are looking for a daily workhorse that is sporty, practical, and fun, this is your vehicle.

Safety

Plenty of standard safety features

The RDX features standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, tire pressure monitoring system, Adaptive Brake Lights, an intelligent safety and information system, advanced compatibility engineering, pedestrian safety, brake assist, and a full complement of front and side curtain airbags.

Some of the safety features on the technology option gets a navigation system with voice recognition and real time traffic information, as well as a rearview camera to avoid driving over obstacles when reversing.
